A Month in the High Desert - Oct 2009

the fall colors were brilliant...

I just returned from a hiking trip out in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument area in Southern Utah. I was the apprentice instructor on a BOSS 28 day field course. I think this was the first time in my adult life I was without modern conveniences for a full month... no cell phone, no email, no lighter, no showers, no tent, no sleeping bag, no backpack, etc. I was really rank by the time the pic above was taken (I believe this was about day 24). Good thing for you that I can't upload smells to the blog :)

What a life altering experience. Really gave me a new baseline about what I need to be comfortable, the value of (or lack thereof) possessions back home, the importance of community, family, and friends, the need to take time to connect back to and get into rhythm with nature, and how living a simplified life can lead to self actualization and true contentment (funny how refocusing on lower level needs can actually move you higher up in Maslow's hierarchy).

One of the more memorable moments on the trip was an afternoon spent under a poncho shelter watching marble sized hail drop from the sky. It's these types of events in life when I start out wondering "Why me, why this, why now?", but then about half way through the experience I'll get a big grin when I realize that one day I'll be sitting around a campfire reminiscing about the time "golfball size hail fell on us for 4 hours..." These kinds of events and images in our lives are the ones forever burned into our memory. Nature happens ~ I just appreciate being able to be there to experience and enjoy...

amazing petroglyphs...
